Narrative:
A serene, relaxing sanctuary for a housewife to engross herself in after a hard day's work - with the provision of mental and metaphysical stimulation, through reading and swimming/bathing.
The model has been designed to address the following:
- The client's gender: the curved wall symbolises femininity and grace, in contrast to the angularity of the rest of the space.
- Activities: reading and bathing/swimming.
- Reading: emphasised by the in-built shelves along the curved wall and the descending steps in the pool which are large enough for one to sit on (these steps are the reading area and run along the exterior edge of the pool).
- Swimming/bathing: emphasised by the pool which takes up the majority of the space, the in-built shelves (which some of them hold books as well)to hold some beauty products etc and the change room defined by a set of white concrete and glazed walls (this can be seen in the Sketchup image showing the building as a plan + functions/program).
- Choice of activities: the intention was to create a space in order for the housewife to relax and NOT to create a space that highlighted her usual activities. Reading and swimming are both appropriate activities to help one relax. Mentally and physically, these are intended to restore her energy levels to normal.
- Walls are arranged to allow for maximum circulation, the entire space is therefore not wasted.
- The glass floor almost acts as a bridge (a link from the interior to the exterior - this mirrors the woman in the painting too as she acts as a link connecting the interior and exterior space together). The glass floor creates a different ambience and atmosphere as she walks from the interior to the exterior. This reflects her activities - it is surreal, a new and different experience altogether is undertaken.
